This dissertation explores a specific recurring use of the sentimental domestic mode in literature and film that has been used by writers/directors, but that has not yet been recognized as a phenomenon that reaches beyond the texts normally considered domestic literature. Where the sentimental domestic meets the con man figure, the text becomes a Bildungsroman where self-interest is sacrificed for domestic stability. The unique figure of the domestic con man is distinct from the trickster archetype, and the domestic con man's Bildungsroman, through constant reinforcement, is now part of the American cultural memory. Many stories of con men were shaped by society's need to attain the American dream, to cut through the class restrictions, to re-invent one's self, to attain wealth, and to achieve a happy family life. Although his specific actions might be condemned, the con man's emotional drives match those of the American public step for step and he serves as an Everyman for our own frustrations, dreams and aspirations. This image of the con man can be seen in works like Pierre (where a struggling writer rebels against his privileged upbringing and runs away with a gypsy girl to start a new life), in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (where an abused child risks everything to help a slave rejoin his family), in The Great Gatsby (where a young man turns his back on a modest past and re-invents himself to win back his teenage sweetheart), Paper Moon (where a Depression era con man teams up with a precocious orphan girl whose gift for the con game is greater than his own), and Matchstick Men (where a successful con man breaks all his own rules to rekindle a relationship with a daughter he thought lost forever). These novels and their film adaptations use the domestic con man figure to point out the flaws in society that ostracize individuals and show that the idea of family transcends society's traditional limitations.

With an Aristotelian bent, Lavandier explores the principles that have consistently produced exceptional films. This text is not merely a format guide. For those who are concerned merely with spacing and margins, they should look elsewhere.
